Spyderco Frequently Asked Questions

Please note: The Following information is quoted from Spyderco, Inc. and concerns their products and their products only.

Q : What is a CLIPIT?

A : Spyderco makes a wide variety of folding knives called CLIPITs. CLIPIT knives derive their name from the clip placed on one side of the handle. The clip allows for secure attachment of the knife to a pocket or other convenient location for easy access. Simply attach the knife to the top of the pocket such that the knife is on the inside of the pocket and the clip in on the outside.

Q : How do I know I have a genuine Spyderco knife?

A : A genuine Spyderco knife has the word "Spyderco" on the knife. Spyderco folding knives also have the Spyderco Trademark Round Hole in the blade (with the exception of the C27 Jess Horn, which has a trapezoidal indent for opening).

Q : Why the round hole in the blade?

A : The hole allows for easy opening and closing of the knife using only one hand. The Spyderco Trademark Round Hole is a symbol of quality in the knife industry and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Q : Why do some models have serrations along the cutting edge?

A : Serrations (sometimes referred to as "teeth") provide single point penetration to permit a more efficient separation of the material being cut. Serrations also increase the length of the cutting edge by up to 10%, thereby increasing edge retention compared to plain edges. Spyderco makes a two-step serration called the SpyderEdge that includes a repeated pattern of one large and two small serrations. (It is important to note that while serrations are highly effective for most cutting tasks, plain edges may work better for very intricate or detailed cutting like wood carving, fileting or caping).

Q : Why do some models have a hole in the handle?

A : The hole at the end of the handle is called a lanyard hole. Rope, string or other lanyards can be strung through the hole and attached to clothing or equipment for additional security (such as when around water).

Q : Why does type of blade steel matter?

A : Knife performance is significantly influenced by the quality of blade steel used. Spyderco researches and selects our blade steels based on the intended use(s) of the knife. Our goal is to optimize edge retention, rust resistance and overall performance.

Q : How do I sharpen my knife?

A : You can sharpen your knife using Spyderco's Tri-Angle SharpmakerTM system, which includes 7" ceramic stones formed in a unique triangular shape to hone both serrated and plain edges. You can also send your Spyderco knife to Spyderco for complimentary sharpening (see address below). (KnifeCenter Note: we also recommend the Lansky Systems HERE)

Q : What if my knife is damaged?

A : Spyderco Customer service can only be achieved by knowing and understanding customer concerns. Spyderco will thoroughly examine and consider each warranty claim and damaged knife for warranty repair or replacement at our discretion. Send your knife via UPS or registered mail (for tracking purposes) and include a complete name, UPS-deliverable street address, daytime phone number, and a description of the problem directly to Spyderco (see address below).
